Masauko E. Chamkakala

Mr. Masauko Edwin Chamkakala is the first and current Director of the Malawi Legal Aid Bureau. He is a legal practitioner with vast expertise on governance and human rights, among others. He holds a Bachelors of Law LL.B (Hons) Degree (Malawi), a Master’s Degree in Women’s Law (Zimbabwe) and an LL.M in Good Governance & Rule of Law (USA).

Mr. Chamkakala’s work experience has seen him work with various private law firms in Malawi. He has also worked for the Malawi Revenue Authority, KPMG International, the Malawi Parliament, and the Office of President and Cabinet (Government Contracts Unit). Internationally Mr. Chamkakala has worked with the World Bank Group (USA).

Mr. Chamkakala has also consulted on legal, governance and human rights issues for the for Malawi Parliament, United Nations Development Program (UNDP), National Aids Commission (NAC), locally and internationally he has consulted for the World Bank Group, StAR Initiative, among other institutions.

Trouble Kalua

Mr. Trouble Kalua is the Deputy Director of the Malawi Legal Aid Bureau. He is a legal practitioner with over 17 years’ experience in both criminal and civil law litigation. He holds a Bachelors of Law (Hons) Degree from the University of Malawi).

Mr. Kalua has previously worked for various private law firms in Malawi such as Sacranie, Gow & Co; Lawson & Co and Sidhu & Co. He has also previously run a private legal firm styled Kalua & Co where he specialized in criminal defence litigation, drafting, and general legal advisory.

Bwighane W. Mwenifumbo

Ms. Mwenifumbo holds an LLB (Hons) degree from the University of Malawi, Chancellor College. She has worked with the Legal Aid Bureau since 2012 when she started working as a Senior Legal Aid Advocate. From 2018 to date she has been serving as Chief Legal Aid Advocate for the Central region.".

Rodgers Mpombeza

Mr. Rodgers Mpombeza is the Chief Legal Aid Advocate at the Malawi Legal Aid Bureau and he heads Southern Regional Office in Blantyre. He is a legal practitioner with over 11 years’ experience in both criminal and civil law litigation. He holds a Bachelors of Law (Hons) Degree from the University of Malawi.

Mr Mpombeza has immense experience in commercial litigation, general civil ligation, drafting, and general legal advisory. He has previously worked for various private law firms in Malawi such as Savjani & Co and Sacranie, Gow & Co.

Chimwemwe Chithope Mwale

Chimwemwe Chithope-Mwale obtained his Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the Law School of Chancellor College, University of Malawi, Malawi in December, 2010 and in the same month joined Legal Aid Bureau (formerly Legal Aid Department), which is a Government office mandated to provide legal aid to indigent persons. He has also interned at the Attorney General’s Chambers, Directorate of Public Prosecutions, Crown & Duke Private Law Firm, Prison, Police and PAS (Paralegal Advisory Service).

He presently works as Chief Legal Aid Advocate and heads one of the only four regional Legal Aid Bureau offices in Malawi. He is passionate about human rights issued and has special expertise in trial advocacy and capital defence.
