African lawyers challenged to be part of complex health emergency solutions

Molly Nkosi sharing her views during the session

On Friday, 25 August 2023, one of Malawi Legal Aid Bureau's Senior Legal Aid Advocates, Molly Nkosi, shared a stage with fellow African Law and Health Experts as a speaker at a panel discussion that tackled issues of Sustaining Legal Practice in Complex Health Emergencies: Lessons from selected African Countries.

The panel discussion was organized by Uganda’s Afya Na Haki Research Institute as part of the 6th Annual Law Conference of the Uganda Law Society.

During the event, it was shared that in disruptive situations, lawyers should transform their practice into an emergency mode where they can press for legislative guidelines and policies that address emergency situations with health connotations beyond infectious pandemics.

On her part, Nkosi pointed out that Legal Aid can be essential in ensuring that marginalized sections of society know what laws can protect them during health emergencies.

"Legal advisory services, legal representation, and civic legal education are important strategies that the Malawi Legal Aid Bureau has used to ensure access to justice in the face of complex public health emergencies," stressed Nkosi.

Nkosi is currently attending a 6-month-long fellowship programme with the Afya Na Haki Research Institute in Uganda until October this year.
