Mchinji community leaders hail Legal Aid Bureau efforts

The Bureau on Wednesday, the 21st of December 2022, was at Simphasi Village in Mchinji district for an awareness campaign.

The Bureau met with stakeholders including community policing officers, traditional leaders, faith leaders, and villagers to sensitize them about its work.

Also in attendance were police officers from Mchinji Police who explained the relationship that the Bureau holds with them in ensuring that justice is served to people with no means to a private lawyer.

While commending the presence of the stakeholders, one of the police officers from Mchinji Police, Sergeant Liness Phiri, indicated that the area usually registers wrangles that can be sorted with massive sensitization campaigns, especially now that it is a growing season.

“It is good that the Bureau and the police are here because not a lot of people, especially chiefs, know the limits of their roles and responsibilities,” explained Sergeant Phiri.

The chiefs highlighted that there were a lot of components of laws they did not know existed, including those relating to marriage, divorce, and land. They insist the knowledge tapped from sessions they have had will equip them to know when and how to refer matters to the police and Legal Aid Bureau.

On her part, Senior Legal Aid Advocate responsible for Mchinji office, Agness Ngoma, pointed out that it is necessary for those in authority at a village level to know the law and how it applies to everyone.LAB officers with police officers during a meeting

“Among others, leaders in communities should know that the Bureau is always ready to assist them in criminal and civil matters,” added Ngoma.

The awareness also took to Kamwendo Trading Center where people were taught about the Bureau's presence and laws that they were curious to know of.
