Nsanje businesswomen drilled on relevance of formal commercial agreements

On Wednesday 16 August 2023, the Bureau’s Legal Aid Officer in Nsanje district, Effort Kusakala, had a legal education session with a group of women of Tiyanjane Rice Producers and Marketing at Nyamadzele Model Primary School.

Members of the Nsanje-based group were keen to learn the principles of commercial agreements in their business venture. They also wanted to know why formal or written agreements are essential when doing business.

During the meeting, Kusakala underscored that formal or written agreements when doing business are vital because documents are very reliable evidence in Courts if someone has breached a commercial agreement.

The group was formed in 2019 as a village bank. In 2021 the women morphed it into a grouping that deals with rice farming, production, and marketing.

So far, they have not faced critical legal challenges but they are grateful that Legal Aid Bureau has enlightened them on what leads to a breach of commercial agreements and the remedies they can get from the Court.

Legal education is one of the roles that the Bureau plays in ensuring that poor people have access to justice. Other roles are legal advice and assistance, including representation in the Court of law.
