LAB Joins WLA in Sensitization Drive

On Monday 27 January 2025, Assistant Legal Aid Officer Nema Mkandawire took part in a sensitization campaign organized by the Women Lawyers Association Malawi (WLA) in Dowa to educate people about their rights.

The activity, which took place at Chimwaza Market, focused on gender-based violence and child marriages.

Addressing the crowd, Mkandawire shared how deceased property should be distributed. She explained that deceased property can be distributed according to what a person has stipulated in their legally valid will and according to Intestacy rules.

“For a will to be valid, there must be two witnesses who are not beneficiaries of the estate. Once a person dies without a will, the ones who benefit from the estate are his immediate family, which includes wife/wives and children, both legitimate and illegitimate,” she added.

Those who gathered were also informed that in instances where the deceased's family wants to grab the property, they can immediately go to the office of the Administrator General or take their complaint to the Legal Aid Bureau offices to have it filed on their behalf at the Administrator General's office.
