The Malawi Legal Aid Bureau on Monday received a 250 thousand kwacha donation towards women and children pro-bono cases courtesy of a club named Wednesday Supper Club.

Speaking for the club also dubbed “Friends of Mr. Rafiq Hajat”, one of the club members, Mr. Nasir Omar says the donation is a means to remember the life of one of their members, late Mr. Rafiq Hajat. He says the club took great consideration in honouring their friends’ memory by contributing to one of the things the late Mr. Hajat was passionate about, which was human rights.

“Since the Bureau works towards helping a lot of abused women and children who are not able to contribute anything to the Bureau to be assisted, we thought it wise that among the donations we planned on making, we should donate to the Bureau. This contribution is towards advancing justice for women and children and thus safeguarding their human rights as Mr. Hajat would have hopefully wanted,” said Mr. Nasir. “We hope that we can do more possibly in future” Upon receiving the donation, the Director of Malawi Legal Aid Bureau, Mr. Masauko Chamkakala said he is pleased to see such initiative towards the work of the Bureau.

“We hope that other stakeholders take up the example of the Wednesday Supper Club to help the Bureau represent those that cannot afford private lawyers. Any contributory donation goes a long way in assisting the public on what they may require in legal issues. Every person counts at the Bureau and thus those interested should not hesitate to approach the Bureau to render financial as well as technical help” said Mr. Chamkakala.

The Bureau continues to assist clients in all regions with 13 district offices and four regional offices. The Bureau plans to open five more district offices across the country.
