Today, Thursday 16 January 2025, the Bureau had an audience with the Public Appointments Committee (PAC) of Parliament of Malawi at the Parliament Building in Lilongwe.
Led by the Acting Director, Chimwemwe Chithope-Mwale, the Bureau presented a report on its performance in the 2024/2025 Financial Year and an appeal on the review of terms and conditions of service.
The Acting Director, in his presentation, highlighted that even though the Bureau faced major financial constraints in the Fiscal Year, it has still registered some milestones, including securing office space for the Nkhatabay district.
“We have secured space to open an office in Nkhatabay but still need at least 20 million Kwacha to refurbish and occupy the building. We have however managed to open a district office in Ntchisi, which is now operational, and for the first time after a long period, we held civic awareness campaigns in several districts including Likoma,” pointed out Chithope-Mwale.
The Bureau has since shared with the Parliamentary committee its plans of opening more offices, training staff, and lobbying for adequate funding from the Treasury.
Vice Chairperson for PAC, Hon. Bester Awali, MP, has since commended the Bureau for the work it continues to carry out in assisting vulnerable people seeing legal services.
“We have heard you and we will need some time to reflect and scrutinize the information and proposals you have given this committee,” added Awali.
The Acting Director attended the meeting together with the Chief Accountant Chilambira Chitembeya, Principal Human Resources Management Officer Lucas Charles, Principal Legal Aid Advocate Patience Dolozi, Human Resource Management Officer Augustine Chitete, and Public Relations Officer John Namalenga Jnr.
