Legal Aid Establishes Toll Free Line For Crime Suspects

At Kanengo Police Station, the Malawi Legal Aid Bureau has introduced a first toll free line for suspects who may need help from the bureau. This was launched on Wednesday, March 24, 2021.

Speaking during the ceremony, Director for Legal Aid Bureau Mr. Masauko Chamkakala said they agreed with National Police Headquarters to have such free line in Police Stations countrywide and Kanengo is the first to be blessed with the facility.

The Officer In-Charge for Kanengo Police Station Mrs. Esther Wandale, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), appreciated the initiative by Legal Aid Bureau stressing that it will enable suspects to enjoy the freedom of being represented in court proceedings. The OC also noted that the initiative will help to decongest police cells.

The Deputy Director for Legal Aid in the country, Trouble Kalua took the task of training police officers and the suspects on how the toll free line will be operating.

One suspect had a chance of trying it to see if it is operational and demonstrate on how the initiative will be of service to his fellow inmates.

The suspect who is answering a charge of theft by servant commended Legal Aid Bureau for the initiative which will fulfill their right to legal representation.

Chamkakala said this is just the beginning and they will propagate this initiative to all Police Stations in Malawi to help those who may wish to be represented by legal experts but they cannot afford costs of private lawyer
