Legal Aid Bureau taps knowledge from WLA Capacity Building Training

A Capacity Building Training, organized by the Women Lawyers Association (WLA), has drilled its members, including those from the Malawi Legal Aid Bureau, on various aspects, including the conduct of high-quality holistic and strategic litigation.

Representing the Bureau at this event were Principal Legal Aid Advocate Kelicia Chingeni based in Lilongwe, Legal Aid Officer Tisungane Thawe, as well as Legal Aid Officers Emma Musinseni and Tisunge Mataka, both based in Mzuzu.

The training, held at Golden Peacock Hotel in Lilongwe on Wednesday 06 September 2023, had a specific focus on empowering women lawyers to conduct legal clinics targeting women and girls in rural communities that typically have limited access to legal services and are often sites of serious human rights violations, handling clients who have suffered trauma, and upholding human rights in all aspects of litigation.

The trained members are now equipped with a comprehensive understanding of regional and international human rights laws related to the rights of women and girls, holistic strategic litigation, ethical considerations when interviewing survivors of human rights violations, and conducting trauma-informed interviews.

Malawi Legal Aid Bureau highly values such interventions, as its primary mission is to provide legal assistance to individuals who lack the means to hire private lawyers. Priority for legal aid is given to vulnerable groups, including women, children, the elderly, and individuals who are ill or in need of special care.
