On Tuesday, December 3, 2024, Assistant Legal Aid Officers Pemphero Kapira and Tamanda Kakhuta Banda from the Bureau’s head office in Lilongwe participated in an awareness session organized by the Women Lawyers Association (WLA) at Nankhuti Community Day Secondary School.
The session was part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, aimed at educating students about gender-based violence, child marriages, and the rights of women and children.
During the event, the Legal Aid Bureau officers shared insights into key legal frameworks, including the Constitution of Malawi, the Child Justice and Protection Act, and the Penal Code. They addressed students’ questions on laws protecting them against issues such as assault, sexual harassment, rape, and defilement and guided how to seek assistance in such cases.
The WLA members present at the session further emphasized the significance of understanding gender-based violence and child marriage laws while encouraging students to value education.
Representatives from the Ministry of Justice - Malawi and INUA Advocacy, also part of the WLA, participated in the session, contributing to the discussions and awareness efforts.
