The Legal Aid Bureau has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Nyale Institute, Center for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR), and Vital Rights Foundation (VRF) to provide legal aid services, policy advocacy, and strategic litigation for individuals who cannot afford private legal representation in matters concerning sexual and reproductive justice.
Acting Director of the Bureau, Chimwemwe Chithope-Mwale, has pointed out that this development is a milestone in providing quality legal aid services to the indigent, who are the primary target of the Bureau’s work.
“The Bureau’s mandates give special attention to vulnerable populations and special groups. Collaborating with these like-minded institutions is a plus for us because we will have more expertise on handling complex matters relating to sexual and reproductive health,” explained Chithope-Mwale.
The one-year-long collaboration further aims to enhance legal frameworks, promote access to justice, and strengthen the protection of marginalized and vulnerable groups.
Through the MoU, the parties are expected to share specialized knowledge in legal research, exchange information and resources, identify and pursue cases for litigation that advance sexual and reproductive justice, and conduct joint awareness campaigns, among other activities.
Nyale Institute is a non-governmental organization whose work involves enhancing collaboration with government and stakeholders to advance sexual and reproductive justice in Malawi.
CHRR is a human rights organization dedicated to the promotion, protection, and advocacy of human rights in Malawi, whereas VRF is a non-profit organization that seeks to advance access to justice and legal empowerment for marginalized communities.
